Ending June with a bang!

June is almost over. Have you done anything fun lately? Not sure where to go or what to do? Here's some ideas to have fun and spend little to nothing doing it.




Through the 21st / Soles 4 Souls shoe trade in

-Soles4Souls is a non-profit organization that facilitates the donations of both new and used shoes, which are used to aid the hurting worldwide. Since its inception, Soles4Souls has collected more than 3 million pairs (or one pair every 28 seconds) from shoe companies, retailers, and individuals. June 19 / 12-2pm / Maranda park party

-Free activities and food galore at the Garfield park in GR! That's at Burton st. SE & Madison Ave. SE. There's a climbing wall, super slide, entertainment and more at these fun parties.


June 20 / 7:30-10pm / Ox-Bow Friday night open studios
-This art school is opening its doors for you to view students work of all sorts. This is located in Saugatuck. Call 269-857-5811 for more info




June 20 / 7:30pm / Live Music with Susan Picking

-Susan is a singer/songwriter with great talent. Join us for a free concert at Schuler's on 28th st.

June 20 / 7-9pm / Walks with a naturalist: summer solstice
-Come to the Roselle park in Ada for a walk outdoors. Pre-registration is appreciated. Call 676-0520 to do so. The cost is $3 / adults & $2 / youth.



June 21 / 9am-5pm / Eastown Bizzare Bazaar
-A one-day marketplace with local artisans showing off their hand made goods. There's going to be more than 60 booths with all kinds of great stuff. You can expect to see some acoustic music groups performing throughout the day as well. This is a free event on Wealthy st. right in the heart of Eastown.


June 21 / 3-11pm / Founders Fest
-Founders Fest is a celebratory “thank you” to Grand Rapids and West Michigan for making Founders what it is today. Founders Brewing Company has been a part of the Grand Rapids scene since 1997 and has grown its brewing tradition from its modest beginnings to most recently being rated the 7th best brewery in the world. Founders Fest will feature six local and regional bands, of varying genres. Music will start on center stage at 3:00 pm, featuring Grand Rapids’ own Oracle, Chance Jones, UV Hippo, Total Blam Blams and Winter/Sessions. Muskegon’s Four Finger Five and the headliner, Chicago Afro-beat Project, will conclude the night. Admission for Founders Fest is $10 and tickets, for those 21 and older, will be available at the gate. June 21 / 10am-6pm / Derbyshire Renaissance Faire
-For just a pittance you can immerse yourself into a day long celebration! With colorful interactive characters wandering through the village of Derbyshire, just waiting to put a smile on your face. With so many hours of family fun, it's a unique event that will indeed put a smile on your face. Don't forget the camera though, as it is encouraged to take your memories home with you.
But don't stop there with over 40 artists and artisan crafters from all over the country, you will find that special gift for that special someone. If you get hungry along the way just stop by the Black Dragon Inn for a tasty fare that is sure you please. With so much to do, you will have to come back everyday.
The Derbyshire Renaissance Festival not only has 3 stages with exciting entertainment, but also creates a unique family atmosphere with wandering Minstrels, and Entertainers throughout the Faire. And it's just $9.00 for Adults and $5.00 for Kids 5-12! The Ren fair takes place at the Muskegon County Fair Grounds. For more information call 269-382-6120



June 21 / 10am / Farm day parade
-Parade starts at Garfield Park and takes place on Hall, Madison and Jefferson Streets. Parade features horses, carriages and wagons, horseback riders, tractors, farm equipment, and bands.


June 19-22 / all day / Spring Lake Heritage Fest
-Fireworks, Civil War in central park, senior ice cream social, farmers market, car show, garage sale, and even a pancake breakfast. All this can be yours through the 22nd in Spring Lake. Call 842-1393 for more info or check out http://www.slheritagefestival.com/.



June 21 / 9am - 5pm / Reeds Lake Clothesline Art Festival
-An outdoor street-fair atmosphere with booths lining the street and individual artists available for sales and special requests. Located at the Gaslight Village and Johns Collins Park.


June 22 / 7-8pm / A poetry open mic night
-Poets, prose writers, and spoken-word artists meet on the Avenue for the Arts to share new work and old favorites. This weekly event is part bare-bones open mic, part writers' workshop, and part social free-for-all. Original work encouraged; covers always welcome. Located at Negative space - 106 S. Division Apt. 311


June 23 / 6:30pm / Jazz at the zoo
-Noel Webley's Jazz People, with vocalist Michelle Covington will be at the John Ball Zoo on this night to grace us with some fabulous music. It will be held in the band shell just south of the zoo entrance. There will be food vendors there as well. I suggest bringing your own lawn chairs. Call 458-0125 for more information.



June 24 / 8-10pm / Live swing dance concert
-Come for an evening of dancing. Rosa Park Circle makes for a great dance venue where hundreds of people to turn out dance. So come to watch the concert, come to dance, and come for a show. The concert is brought to you by the Grand Rapids Original Swing Society and is paid for by your donations.


June 24 / 9pm / Acoustic open mic night with Karisa Wilson
-"Acoustic Open Mic: Hosted by Karisa Wilson and Magic Hat Brewery" No Cover 18+ All musical styles welcome. Audience Votes 2 winners each week, to compete on last Tuesday of each month. Prizes every week, by Magic Hat Brewery. Hosted by Rocky's Own Karisa Wilson, 2008 Jammie Winner of both "Best Album of 2008" and "Best New Local Artist". Rocky's and Karisa Wilson's Open Mic is Grand Rapids Longest Running Continuous Open Mic. Located at Rocky's Bar and Grille on Ottowa Ave. NW.


June 24 / 7pm / Paper craft night
-For adults only at Barnes n' Noble in the Rivertown mall. Call 531-1825 for more info.



June 25 / 6:30-8:30pm / Pedal GR
-A biweekly bicycle ride exploring the neighborhoods and sites of Grand Rapids. This is a slow ride for riders of ALL abilities, put on through the Rapid Wheelmen Bicycle Club. Nobody will be left behind.
The ride starts and ends at Founder's Brewing Co., with cold beer (or soft drinks) to follow the ride. Participants should plan on meeting at around 6:15 p.m. Routes and directions are posted ahead of time on the PedalGR blog (pedalgr.com).
Having fun and riding safely are the two most important goals! Helmets are required on all Rapid Wheelmen club rides.


June 25 / 6:30-9pm / Blues on the mall
-Ana Popovic will be on stage to sing the blues. This event is located at Rosa Parks Circle downtown. Bring your own lawn chairs.



June 25 / 6pm / Fourth Wall Film Event
-The Fourth Wednesday in the ongoing "Wednesdays @ Wealthy" series are "Fourth Wall," sponsored by West Michigan Film & Video Alliance. WMFVA Fourth Wall provides a venue for independent filmmakers to screen their work to an audience. Networking and critical feedback is encouraged. Admission is $5.



June 25 / 11am / Science Potion Day

-A very special performance by folk singer Robin Lee Berry at the downtown Schuler's.

June 28 / Wildlife Weekend
-Bring the family to the Blandford Nature Center for a free hour-long wildlife program every 4th Saturday. Call 735-6240 for details.



June 28 / 11am - 10pm / Water Festival
-This day-long event takes place at Riverside Park on Monroe Ave. and offers musical performances, workshops, children's activities and connections to campaigns and projects working to protect waterways. Call 742-4084 for details.



June 30 / 6:30pm / Jazz at the zoo
-New Orleans Nouveau, Mark Kahny's sextet will be playing that night at the band shell just south of the zoo entrance. Bring your own lawn chair and some money for the food vendors.



June 30 / All Faiths day at the Whitecaps game
-Bring in a church bulletin and get half off box or reserved seats!

I bet you never thought this one was going to end...neither did I!
