Fall is upon us and my husband is way too giddy about Halloween. Since our budget is on scrimp mode I'm working on a plan to have a great holiday without breaking my piggy bank. Here's some ideas for you to try as well:
Places to find cheap costumes
1. Salvation Army - I've been to the one on Plainfield and they have a whole rack full of costumes.
2. TJMaxx or Marshall's - I think they might be comparable to Wal Mart
3. Any Thrift store like Goodwill or any you might have near you.
4. Once upon a child - Great source for children
5. Dollar Tree - They have lots of cheap and easy things to use for costumes
DIY Costumes
1. Buy scrubs at a thrift store and billy bob teeth and claim to be a redneck dentist
2. Be an accident victim by wearing old clothes you can rip and mess up and then just buy make up or use your own to create a gory effect
3. Prom queen or king - Get a hideous prom dress at a thrift store and buy a crown at a dollar store. This can also be a fairy godmother, the good witch from wizard of oz or miss universe.
4. Construction worker - Wear a flannel shirt, not good jeans, work gloves, a tool belt if you have one, a tape measure and any other tools you can find. You can also find a toy hard hat at the dollar store. This is a great one for kids as well.
5. Gypsy - Throw on a flowy skirt, loose shirt, knee high socks and wrap scarves around your waist, shoulders and head. Add a bunch of costume jewelry and your good to go. Works on kids too!
DIY Decorations
1. Take some white or black pillowcases and use them as chair covers. Cut out spooky designs from felt and glue them to the pillowcases.
2. Fill glass vases or containers with rats, snakes or spiders bought from the dollar store. Have a bunch all together to be extra creepy.
3. Get a white sheet and a black marker and make your own spiderweb tablecloth to use every Halloween.
4. Use black sheets to make gloomy curtains throughout the house. You can add some of the web spread you can buy at dollar stores
5. Using black felt, cut out bat shapes and hang them from the ceilings using fishing line.
