Thrifty holiday decorating

In case you're one of those people who haven't started to decorate for the holidays, here's a special post to save you some money.

To start...you don't need to plaster the house with decorations. You can keep it simple and still looking beautiful while saving some change.

I like to start with a table cloth. This doesn't need to be your typical Christmas one. It can just be a bright red or green table cloth. Anything that pops will draw attention to that area. Then you can always add some of your own candles as the centerpiece.

I have a special thing I do every year of changing my table design each week before Christmas. My table cloth starts it off and then I pick up some confetti from the party store for the next week and sprinkle it on the table for design #2. The third week is my holiday placemats that I got at a thrift store one year. And by that time I'm at Christmas. Changing my table design has made things seem like I have a lot of decorations but it cost me less than $5 for all of it.

Candles are a great inexpensive way to decorate as well. After you've picked your color scheme just purchase candles at the dollar store in different sizes and tie them together with a ribbon for a classy Christmas look.

The dollar store is a great place to pick up inexpensive items for decorating. If you like to have candy out for people during the holidays than you'll want to stop by this store to pick up some holiday canisters to hold them all in. These can be pulled out every year as well. Or you can reuse them as gift containers.

Glass jars and vases are great cheap items that can hold lots of festive things to add to the look of Christmas. Candy canes and mints are great fillers and only cost $1 at the $1 store. You can also use extra Christmas bulbs to put inside. I love using bright colored ones to add a great sparkle to the room.

Towels and potholders are also dirt cheap at the $1 store and can be put in the kitchen and bathroom for a little extra touch.

There's no need to go overboard with trinkets galore. Keep it simple and your house will look sophisticated even on a tightwads budget.

Not a comment to this specific post, but...

Just checked in here today (love your site's content) and see you've changed the look by using one of those third-party templates (you know, the ones that make MySpace so terrible).

In doing so you've diminished the friendliness and readability of your blog immensely.

As I said, I love your site's content, so I'll probably still come back, but I definitely would have passed it by unread if it looked this way when I first visited.

Please consider making your excellent content more useful by *not* being quite so fancy.
