What can I get for a dollar???

It seems these days I am beginning to realize just how old I am. I am able to use the common phrase, "when I was your age ____ was just $1!". Feel free to fill in the blank. I never thought I'd be making such statements but it has come to pass. So it got me thinking, what CAN you buy for a dollar these days? Believe it or not the dollar bill will get you farther than you think. So here's a list of 15 things you can get for a dollar. And I didn't even include items from the dollar store! This is a list that anyone in Grand Rapids could use.

1. Dollar Menu's abound at almost every fast food chain. And while they are slowly increasing the dollar menu to the $1.29 menu, you can still find some food for one washington.

2. Movies are actually available for $1! Most rental stores offer older movies for $1. Eye on Video offers monthly specials that include new releases for just $1. When you stop by their store just grab the monthly special flyer as you walk in and you can see all the $1 deals. You can also rent new releases at the Red Box vending machine in Wal Mart on Alpine for just $1.

3. Baskin Robbins on Plainfield offers $1 scoop Tuesdays from 6-10pm. A kids scoop of ice cream is just $1. That will also help the diet!

4. A Krispy Kreme donut at a gas station or the store. Ok, so this one definitely won't help the diet but you'll really feel satisfied...for about a minute.

5. Some big stores like Target now have their own $1 section. You can find a variety of items there. But beware! Target has added more expensive items to this section so be sure to look at the price tag.

6. A greeting card is available at tons of stores for $.94! You can find these at Hobby Lobby, Meijer, Target, Wal Mart and the like. It's a smaller section but fits my budget.

7. A cup of coffee! I've heard that Starbucks introduced the $1 coffee with free refills this past January!

8. A 2009 calendar from Michaels. The selection isn't astonishing but I got a fantastic family one last year that has a spot for everyone's name and came with stickers for kids events and appointments. While you're there, check out THEIR $1 section. Craftsters are sure to find something.

9. ELF makeup and NYC makeup. These can both be found at some of our bigger stores like Meijer and Target. NYC can sometimes be more expensive but I often get some items for $1 with them. You can even check out ELF makeup on line at eyeslipsface.com and purchase it for $1! They will also tell you which stores around town carry their makeup.

10. Go to any Salvation Army on Saturday night between 5 and 9pm and you can get 2 items that are in the color tag sale!

11. 4 games at Chuck E Cheese or a sketch photo there instead.

12. itunes songs are only $1 at their online store. Even if you don't have an ipod you can still use this to get music and keep on your computer or create mixed CD's.

13. If you go to Bath and Body Works during their semi-annual sale around January and June you can snag sweet smelling bars of soap for just $1! A lot of times you can find other items just as cheap as well.

14. Small plants can be found at Wal Mart to liven and freshen up your house.

15. Usually in the summer months you can even catch a game of bowling for $1 at many local alleys. The shoes may also cost $1. Northfield lanes used to have special nights all year round but now they've upped it to $1.50. Still a cheap fun time for the family.

If you have an item you'd like to add to this list feel free to e-mail me at savedfromwaste@yahoo.com or go ahead and comment on this post. I look forward to hearing your ideas!
